Scholes & Fletcher Sign New Deals

Paul Scholes and Darren Fletcher have both agreed new contracts with the club.

Scholes, who turns 34 in November, has been handed a one-year contract extension taking him through until at least June 2010. Fletcher, meanwhile, has agreed a deal until June 2012.

Sir Alex Ferguson expressed his delight at securing deals for two vital members of his squad. He told ManUtd.com: “Paul is proof that if you look after yourself you can carry on playing and be rewarded at a club of this size. He’s nearly 34 years old and he’s been here since he was 14 - that tells you the desire and the ability he has to stay at the top.

"Darren is in the same vein as Ryan, Paul and Wes in that he is a long serving member of the team. His consistency and level-headed approach is a great attribute and we are all delighted that they have signed new contracts.”

Paul Scholes says his motivation to carry on playing is in trying to top last season's Premier League and Champions League double. “It’s great to sign a new deal," he said. "Last season was fantastic but you always want to achieve more and with this team we are capable of doing just that.”

Darren Fletcher couldn't imagine playing anywhere else. “When you play at such a great club with a great team you always want to be a part of that," said the Scot. "The spirit here is amazing and I am happy that I can play my part in achieving more success.”
