Scholes Pleased With League Ton

United’s match-winner Paul Scholes was typically modest after his 100th league goal for United ensured the Reds returned to top spot in the table.

The midfield maestro struck from close range with little under 20 minutes remaining, and showed good technique to make space for himself when the ball broke to him in the area.

Whilst delighted to reach the landmark (he is also just two short of 150 United goals overall), Scholes was more satisfied with helping the team secure a vital three points.

Speaking to MUTV, Scholes said: “It was a big game. We knew it was going to be a tough place to come. Conditions weren’t ideal for football and they are a big physical team who made it difficult for us.

“The pitch wasn’t great and I don’t think Wolves were too interested in playing football, they just tried to stop us playing which made it hard, but that’s the sort of thing you come up against in these games.

“You need to score goals to win games and thankfully the ball fell to me and I managed to put it away. I’ve been on 99 goals for a while so it was nice to get my 100th and I’m pleased with the achievement.”

United were made to battle throughout the 90 minutes, but the Reds' back four, which included both Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic for the first time since October, handled everything Wolves threw at them.

“We defended really well," declared Scholes. "Rio and Vida especially were fantastic at the back and didn't gived anything away.

“We have a lot of top class defenders - Jonny [Evans] and Wes [Brown] have done really well, but we all know how strong Rio and Vida are together and they’ve proved that again."

Things could not be tighter at the top of the table with United, Chelsea and Arsenal all vying for the championship crown. The trio are separated by just two points and a handful of goals, and Scholes is predicting a fight to the finish.

“All three teams will fancy their chances and it really is very tight," he said. "It’s always nice to be top of the league and it’s a good time to be there with nine games left.

"It gives us confidence and hopefully we can win all our games and go on to win the league."
