Lindegaard Confirms United Interest

Danish goalkeeper Anders Lindegaard has confirmed Manchester United's desire to sign him.

Sir Alex Ferguson and his backroom staff have identified Lindegaard as the natural successor to Edwin van der Sar, who is expected to retire at the end of the season. And United are poised to make a £5million bid for Lindegaard in the January transfer window to give him time to settle in at Old Trafford before taking over from van der Sar.

Lindegaard, who plays for Norwegian side Aalesands, has been watched regularly by United's goalkeeping coach Eric Steele over the past year and has been tipped as the new Peter Schmeichel. And Lindegaard confirmed United's interest in him when he said: "There are lots of rumours in the press about the clubs interested in me but some of them are actually quite accurate. And yes, it is Manchester United. I know there is interest from United. It is not just coming from the media."

Steele watched Lindegaard in action for Denmark last Friday when the 26-year-old came on as a substitute for the injured Thomas Sorensen in a 3-1 defeat to Portugal.
