Clubs Unite For Speed Tribute

Football played a supporting role on Wednesday as both Manchester United and Crystal Palace paid tribute to the late Gary Speed with a minute’s applause at Old Trafford.

The Theatre of Dreams celebrated the life of the former Leeds United, Everton, Newcastle United, Bolton Wanderers and Sheffield United midfielder who sadly died last Sunday.

Prior to kick-off in the Carling Cup fifth round, Sir Alex Ferguson used his pre-match programme notes to pay respect to Speed and his grieving family.

"Before we start though I would just like to say that here at Old Trafford we are shocked at the tragic death of Gary Speed at the age of 42," the boss wrote.

"He became part of our football family after settling in these parts as manager of Wales, following a fine career as a true and honest professional. Our sympathies go to his family."
