Evans, Welbeck Ruled Out

Danny Welbeck and Jonny Evans look set to miss United's match against Swansea at Old Trafford on Sunday.

Evans picked up an injury in the run-up to Monday's Manchester derby and, although "improving a bit", Sir Alex Ferguson told reporters at his pre-match press conference that the defender was unlikely to be fit for kick-off.

He also ruled out young striker Welbeck, who picked up an injury at the Etihad Stadium under a clumsy challenge from Nigel De Jong. Welbeck left the ground on crutches and initial reports suggested he could miss the rest of the season and England's European Championships campaign.

But Sir Alex revealed he hoped Welbeck would be "ready for Sunderland", when United travel to the Stadium of Light on the final day of the season.

Swansea, promoted from the Championship last season, come to Old Trafford safe in the knowledge that they'll play top-flight football again next term.

In fact, they've done more than merely survive in the Barclays Premier League: they've impressed almost everyone with their insistence on playing patient, passing football and go into the game in 12th position.

"The way Swansea have played this season has been admirable," Sir Alex said. "I went to see them last weekend. They want to play football. The manager has stuck by his principles and they've had a fantastic season.

"[Losing at City on] Monday night was a blow to us. We can only do what we can now and hopefully win our game on Sunday.

"By the time we kick off we'll know what we'll need to do. [City are at Newcastle], who are fighting for that position in the top four. They have a chance. It's an exciting end to the season.

"The challenge for City is to win at Newcastle and Newcastle are playing very well. They've lost 4-0 at Wigan but galvanised themselves to win at Chelsea last night. Their form is good and it won't be an easy game for City.

"We'll be aware of the game going on before ours. You can't avoid it. We still have to prepare for our game, though. We won't neglect our preparation for our game."
