Giggs: Let's Win Title Back
Ryan Giggs is proud to have been named the greatest Premier League player of the past 20 seasons but is already looking to the future and believes Manchester United will come back stronger in their bid to reclaim the title.
Giggs received the special accolade at an awards ceremony in London which also honoured Sir Alex Ferguson as the top manager of the Premier League era.
Ferguson and Giggs have helped United to 12 Premier League titles but this season they agonisingly missed out to local rivals Manchester City after an extraordinary final day.
The 38-year-old Welshman insists there were still some positives to take from the way United played but he will head into the summer break in a sombre mood.
"Obviously for us it has been disappointing. It has been an exciting season and the Premier League just seems to get better each year, but we'll go away on our holidays with disappointment," he told Sky Sports News.
"We are gutted but also proud of the way we have played this year, proud of some of the performances we have put in.
"To come up with a tally of 89 points and then just get pipped on goal difference, there's a lot of positives to take from the season."
There have been suggestions that the balance of power in Manchester is shifting and that United will need to strengthen their squad to remain competitive, but whatever Ferguson decides to do in the transfer market Giggs is confident of reclaiming back the title.
"That is up to the manager. We have got a good squad and whether he adds a couple of players we'll have to see," said the veteran midfielder.
"Whether you have just lost out on the title or won, the manager always looks to improve and looks forward, and that is what he will do in the summer.
"I think you have seen over the last couple of seasons that City have got stronger and stronger, and it is up to us really to try and win the title back next year.
"Obviously some of the other teams like Chelsea, Arsenal and Tottenham will be looking to strengthen."
Giggs believes the secret to his longevity is enthusiasm and has indicated that he will carry on playing for as long as Ferguson believes he can do an important job.
Asked for his reflections on the last 20 years, Giggs added: "You just enjoy it. That's why I'm still playing, because I enjoy it more than ever.
"You look back at games you have been part of and the players you have played with, and just realise how lucky you are.
"As long as I am enjoying it and as long as I am still getting picked, then I will carry on.
"I feel good at the moment. I will go away and recharge the batteries and look forward to next season."
