Capital One Cup 3rd Round Draw: Reds Paired With Magpies

Manchester United will play Newcastle United at home in the third round of the Capital One Cup - the new guise for the Football League Cup.

The Reds have had recent success in the competition, of course - winning the trophy in consecutive years in 2009 and 2010. However, in the last two seasons, Sir Alex Ferguson's men have bowed out in the fifth round - to West Ham and Crystal Palace.

Despite being regular opponents in the Barclays Premier League, the two Uniteds have only met twice before in the League Cup with one victory apiece. The Reds won the first meeting by an overwhelming margin, thumping the Magpies 7-2 in the fourth round back in October 1976. The more recent League Cup encounter was in 1994/95, when the home side at St James' Park won 2-0.

The current Newcastle side will be encouraged by their last trip to Old Trafford, last November's 1-1 draw in the league - achieved with the aid of a controversial penalty converted by Demba Ba after Javier Hernandez had put the hosts in front. Alan Pardew's team put a further dent in the Reds' title bid by winning the return match 3-0.

Full draw: Manchester United v Newcastle United, Man City v Aston Villa, MK Dons v Sunderland, West Brom v Liverpool, Crawley Town v Swansea City, QPR v Reading, Norwich City v Doncaster Rovers, Bradford City v Burton Albion, Preston North End v Middlesbrough, Arsenal v Coventry, Southampton v Sheffield Wednesday, Chelsea v Wolves, Carlisle United v Tottenham, Swindon v Burnley, West Ham v Wigan, Leeds v Everton.
