Van Persie Hails Important Day

Robin van Persie spearheaded Manchester United’s 4-1 win at the Liberty Stadium and described it as “an important day” for the champions to show their quality.

With the pressure on the Reds to pull out a good performance for new manager David Moyes’ first league game in charge, United’s no.20 expressed his delight at victory in what he described as a tough encounter.

“It was an important day for us today; you don’t want to lose the first game of the season. I think we played well, everyone looked fit and we worked very hard. I’m very pleased,” van Persie told Sky Sports. “Swansea were better than us for the first fifteen minutes, but the goal changed the game and the second shortly after really helped us.”

With two goals to his name already this season, having notched a double in the Community Shield against Wigan Athletic, van Persie continued to show his importance to United with two well-taken goals to help the Reds to victory.

“My first goal came from a great pass from Giggsy,” he said of the game’s opening goal. “I felt at the time that my touch was a little heavy so I had to really go for it and take it as high as possible. The second goal was back to the streets a little bit!”

Indeed it was. With little back-lift, the striker rifled the ball into the top corner after using Wayne Rooney’s decoy run to buy himself the half-a-yard of space needed to put United in to an unassailable lead. However, when questioned, van Persie was not convinced that his was goal of the day. “The fourth goal from Welbz was unbelievable as well. So, which goal was best? That will be a close call.”
