Double Century Delight

Wayne Rooney savoured reaching his second century of goals for Manchester United but insisted three points for the Reds in the Champions League was the most important statistic on Tuesday night.

The England striker scored the first and third of his team's goals as Bayer Leverkusen were beaten 4-2 at Old Trafford to give David Moyes a winning start in his first campaign in the competition. Wayne's own Champions League debut was, of course, where his goalscoring career with United began with a bang back in 2004 - when he scored a hat-trick, also at home, to Fenerbahce.

"It’s gone very quick and I am very pleased to have scored 200 goals for a club like Manchester United. It's a great honour for me. Hopefully there will be more to come," Rooney said in his post-match interview.

Wayne could have netted another one between his two strikes - and ultimately could have finished up with another hat-trick - when he rounded Leverkusen goalkeeper Bernd Leno but he then rolled the ball agonisingly across the goalmouth.

"I was in two minds to be honest with you as Robin [van Persie] was there as well. Maybe I should have gone straight for goal. But we got the three points in the end which was all important. It was very important to win tonight for the manager. It [the Champions Leahue] is a learning curve for him."

When asked if he is happy to have remained a Manchester United player after a summer of speculation, Rooney replied positively: "I’m concentrating on my football as I have done all summer.

I’ve got my head down and I’ve worked really hard.

"I got myself ready for the season and I’m delighted with the way I have come back. I’m delighted to be back playing and scoring goals.

"I’ve said all along that the fans have been great with me. The reception I get here is always great and hopefully I can repay them with [more] goals like tonight."
