Jones: Januzaj Can Be A Star

Phil Jones has no doubt Adnan Januzaj will be a star for Manchester United if he keeps working hard and playing like he did against Southampton on Saturday.

Januzaj produced a Man of the Match display in the disappointing 1-1 draw at Old Trafford, hours after the club announced he had committed his future for the next five years. That news was good news for Jones, who knows the Reds have a special yet level-headed youngster on their hands.

"He’s a terrific talent and it’s an old cliché but as long as he keeps his head down, he can do great things for the club," Jones said.

"There’s massive pressure on him and he’s only a young kid but it’s testament to him that he’s come in and done a great job.

"He threaded a brilliant ball for our goal [against Southampton]. He was sharp, he has nimble feet and he’ll do great things for this club if he keeps working hard.

"He goes about his business quietly and if he keeps producing performances like that, he’ll be a real star."

Januzaj was the standout performer in a United side who played well in patches but failed to add to Robin van Persie’s first-half goal and succumbed to a late equaliser.

"It was a frustrating draw," Jones admitted. "We won at Sunderland and really wanted to kick on from that so, although we’ve not lost the game, we’re still disappointed.

"I thought we did alright in parts of the game but we probably should have scored more and it was a sloppy goal to concede at the end.

"We’ve probably not had the start to the season that we wanted but we’ll keep working hard. It’s not long until we play again [against Real Sociedad on Wednesday] and we’ve done well so far in the Champions League, so we want that to continue."

Jones was speaking to ManUtd.com and PA Sport
