Rooney Tipped For The Top

Wayne Rooney took another small step closer to becoming Manchester United's record scorer when his well-struck free-kick beat West Brom goalkeeper Boaz Myhill on Saturday.

And while his 202nd goal for the Reds was not enough to secure any points from the match, it extended an encouraging personal start to the campaign for the in-form striker. The two men who currently sit above him in the club's all-time goalscoring charts, Sir Bobby Charlton (249) and Denis Law (237), believe it is only a matter of time before he gets the 48 needed to put him out in front.

“I've spoken to Wayne and I've told him he's doing really, really well. Fantastically well,” Sir Bobby told United Review. “I'll lose no sleep over it at all if Wayne beats my record. It will be something else for the club to be proud of. And he can buy the drinks!”

Also speaking to United Review, Law echoed his former team-mate's sentiments, heaping praise on not only Wayne’s goalscoring but also his attitude to win.

“One thing that Rooney’s always shown since he’s arrived at the club is that he’s not only a goalscorer, but a person who tries, no matter what the scoreline is," said Law. “I wasn’t surprised to see Wayne reach 200 goals for United. I said years ago that as long as he stayed fit he would become the highest scorer and I have no doubt he'll break the record.
