Welbeck: Let's Build On This

Danny Welbeck hopes Manchester United’s 2-0 win over Swansea City, the team's first of 2014, will be a turning point in the Reds' season.

After Antonio Valencia opened the scoring, Welbeck netted the second goal as the champions ended a run of three straight defeats to claim a first victory of the new year, and he is already eagerly looking forward to the next fixture, a trip to face Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea next Sunday.

“We’ve set a platform now and really want to build on that and gather some momentum,” Welbeck told MUTV. “The next match is the most important now. That’s what you’ve got to do, take it one game at a time.”

The in-form forward had the chance to break the deadlock in the first half when he shot wide, but persevered and saw his efforts rewarded with his ninth goal of the season on the hour-mark.

“I was pretty disappointed going in at half-time after missing that first opportunity,” Danny continued. “I just tried to stay focused, keep concentrating and remain positive that I would get another chance. Thankfully I did and put it in the back of the net.”

A tactical tweak at the break of Adnan Januzaj swapping positions with Shinji Kagawa helped United clinch the win with both goals coming after the interval. Kagawa moved inside to play in 'the number ten' position behind Welbeck, who praised the Japanese international for his role in the victory.

“I thought Shinji was the difference in the second half,” added Danny. “Once we moved him to the middle he looked like he was at home and he really switched it on for us. He made a massive difference.”
