Moyes: Nothing Went For Us

David Moyes was disappointed and frustrated with the way the game panned out as Manchester United suffered a 3-0 home defeat to Liverpool on Sunday.

Having not conceded a Barclays Premier League penalty since December 2011, the Reds fell foul of three in one game against the second-placed Merseysiders.

The second – converted by Steven Gerrard moments into the second half – came at a terrible time for United and a harsh-looking second yellow card for Nemanja Vidic only compounded matters. Gerrard's first-half spot-kick and Luis Suarez's late goal completed the scoring.

"There's disappointment for everybody – all the Manchester United supporters – that we didn't get the result today, and disappointment about the goals and the way they were conceded," Moyes told MUTV.

"With the penalty kicks, some were but some weren’t [correctly awarded]. We didn't play well enough in the first half but we weren’t necessarily a goal worse off at half-time.

"I thought we could come out and start brightly and get ourselves back in the game but, before we've even taken our seats, we've given a penalty kick away.

"Things didn’t go for us at all. When we were 2-0 down we had a spell where we played quite well and tried to get ourselves back in the game with one or two half-chances. But they weren’t enough and the last thing we needed was to lose a player.

"They missed the penalty but, at that point and down to 10 men, it made it an uphill task. It was just a disappointing day all round."

Moyes was unhappy with his side’s lack of cutting edge in the final third and admitted he had not seen the team’s below-par display coming.

"I was disappointed [with the lack of shots on goal] and didn’t think we ever got that," he said. "I thought we grew into the game for 10 to 15 minutes before half-time. We looked a bit more likely when I swapped Adnan Januzaj’s side and he did better on the right.

"But, prior to that, we had not really offered enough and it’s difficult to explain. The players had looked in good fettle this week – they were confident, hard-working and motivated."

Moyes had words of praise for United's fans, who were in good voice to the end, and turned his focus to the task of overturning a 2-0 Champions League deficit to Olympiacos.

"The fans were fantastic and deserve great credit for the way they supported the team today," Moyes added. "If they give us that support on Wednesday night, it will give us a chance of getting through in the Champions League.

"The players are well aware of what it means on Wednesday and what we have got to do. We’ve got something to go for so hopefully we can do that."
