Jamie Carragher: Manchester United Could Not Handle Everton's Power Or Pace

Jamie Carragher says Manchester United could not handle the power or pace of Everton.

The hosts scored twice in the first-half to beat United 2-0 at Goodison Park on Sunday.

Leighton Baines and Kevin Mirallas got the goals on Merseyside to earn Everton - who prevailed by a one-goal margin at Old Trafford back in December - a first six-point haul against United since the 1969/70 campaign.

The loss means that Champions League qualification is now impossible for United and Carragher said it was as bad as he has seen the defending champions play all season.

"When you think about how Everton played it was not about the possession football, it was about power and pace - Manchester United could not handle it," said Carragher.

"That pace and power was epitomised by Seamus Coleman and rightly so - he was man of the match. Kagawa in that wide left role must have been thinking what this English football is all about - he could not handle them. The difference between the two sides intensity-wise was chalk and cheese.

"There has been a lot of doubt about Manchester United this season and David Moyes has taken a lot of criticism. But this was as bad as I've seen them. There has been a few, a long list with 11 defeats now, but I think that was the worst.

"What is the plan from United? When you watch them play you can't quite understand what they are trying to achieve and how they are going about it. Last year at times at Liverpool with Brendan Rodgers it was not going well but you could understand what he was trying to do, there was a plan.

"Watching Manchester United now and you are not quite sure what they are doing or what they are supposed to be doing. My whole career was total dominance by Manchester United; I wished I played against a Manchester United team like we saw today!

"David Moyes has got to get more out of these players, you cannot go from being champions to being 7th, 8th in the league."

Carragher was also scathing about Moyes who said in his post-match interview that he thought United played well in the first half.

"I must have watched a different game to David Moyes," added Carragher.

"This keeping the ball and going nowhere - that is not Manchester United playing well. Manchester United create chances, they put you under pressure! Forget the possession stats, they mean nothing unless you are doing something with it. If David Moyes thinks Manchester United played well in that first half, then I worry for Manchester United."

Former Manchester United striker Dwight Yorke agreed that Moyes should shoulder some of the blame but says that the players are responsible too.

He said: "What I have seen is a Manchester United team who lack the desire to win a football match. The boys look like they are ready for the end of the season and to go on holiday.

"The players and the manager have to take responsibility - the manager is putting out a team he believes is going to win him a football match. These players have not been able to perform.

"But what stands out even further is the desire from the players - they don't seem to have it. They had a lot of possession during the game but where is the end product? That is not the United of old that we know. Pace and power is what United used to do to other teams, now other teams are doing that to them.

"Credit to Everton who really took the game to United, they knew the importance of this game if they were to have any aspirations of qualifying for the Champions League. We saw that Everton came out of the blocks and they were outstanding. We looked for a reaction from Man United but they could not handle them - Manchester United were shred to pieces."
