Amos: De Gea Deserved Awards

Ben Amos has paid tribute to David De Gea and explained why his fellow goalkeeper deserved to win big during Manchester United's end-of-season awards night.

De Gea achieved an historic double by being named Player of the Year by both his team-mates and the fans. Having worked closely with the Spanish glovesman throughout the campaign, Amos is convinced that his friend is a more than worthy winner.

“He got my vote because he thoroughly deserved it and was so consistent, which is obviously what you want from a keeper," Ben told MUTV. "It wasn't a great season for the club but he was the one player who kept his performances at a good level.

"In terms of everyone I have spoken to at the club, everyone is in agreement. His consistency set him apart and it is hard to think of a bad game that he had."

The club awards and his subsequent inclusion in Spain's provisional World Cup squad of 30 players emphasises De Gea’s development since making a tricky start to his Reds career. He's proved his doubters wrong in some style, observed by an admiring Amos.

"His first six to 12 months at the club were an adjustment period for him and it was a bit of a shock, but he soon got over that and adapted his game," assessed Amos. "That’s what you have got to do to be a top player.

“I pick up a lot of things from him, as I do with every goalkeeper. He is very unorthodox in his style and I don’t think there is another goalkeeper you can compare to him style-wise. He has got some quirky attributes that I like as well.”
