Carragher: United Transfers 'Mismanaged'

Jamie Carragher has accused Manchester United of "mismanagement" over transfers after their 5-3 loss to newly-promoted Leicester City.

The Foxes produced an inspired comeback from 3-1 down to leave big-spending Manchester United shell-shocked at the King Power Stadium, Jamie Vardy delivering a man-of-the-man performance.

The defeat means Louis van Gaal's side have conceded eight goals in their first five games of the season.

And though United spent over £200million this summer on the likes of Angel di Maria and Daley Blind, Jamie Carragher says they should have replaced defensive stalwarts Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic and Patrice Evra.

Carragher said: "The bigger picture at United is that they’re the biggest spenders in Europe and they didn’t buy a defender.

"They weren’t shocked that Ferdinand was going but they let him go, Vidic announced (he was leaving) in January.

"They’re the biggest spenders – how have they not addressed that?

"We’ve spoken about Liverpool before and it cost them the league last year with the goals they conceded. This looks similar now at United.

"Yet, you look at them going forward and they look like the old United. There’s pace in that side and players that can score goals but they are nowhere near good enough at the back.

"To spend that much money and not bring in a top class defender - that’s mismanagement."
