Menez: I Could Have Joined United

AC Milan forward Jeremy Menez insists he has no regrets at turning down the chance to join Manchester United four years ago.

The 27-year-old joined the Serie A side in the summer and has got off to a blistering start having scored three goals in his first two appearances for the club.

But it was during his Roma days in 2010 when he was courted by United, and the Frenchman admits it was initially difficult to turn down then-boss Sir Alex Ferguson.

“Saying no to Ferguson wasn’t easy, but I was still young and I had to follow my own path,” he told Gazzetta dello Sport.

"Then when [former boss Vincenzo] Montella came to Roma, it became difficult for everybody. Before he came, I was playing all the time, but he had different ideas.

"I was then a first-team regular at Paris Saint-Germain under Carlo Ancelotti, but Laurent Blanc came along and he dropped me.

"After an operation, I came back and scored, but nothing changed. I accepted his decision, even if it was hard," he added.

“It was a difficult year, but it helped me grow."

After ending his tricky spell in the French capital this summer, Menez is rebuilding himself in Milan and he believes his side can challenge for the Serie A title this season.

"With Milan, we can aim for the Scudetto. I really believe we can win it,” he said.

"Our minimum aim has got to be a top-three finish and a place in the Champions League, though. Milan can compete with anybody."
