Young's Five Favourite United Games
Ashley Young sat down with United Uncovered to discuss the top five United games he's either watched or been involved in...
1. United 8 Arsenal 2, Old Trafford
28 August 2011, Premier League
I’ve got to put this first on my list! It’s the one game that comes into my head straight away. Getting on the scoresheet is always nice and to do it twice is even better. That day was just surreal. Every time we attacked we looked like we were going to score and I remember saying after the game that it could have been more. Everything just clicked and I don’t think Arsenal knew what was going on at all!
2. United 1 Chelsea 1 (United win 6-5 on penalties), Luzhniki Stadium
21 May 2008, Champions League final
It was a really great match and one of those where you think to yourself 'one day, I’d love to be involved in a game like that'. It came down to penalties and in that situation you either score or you miss. United had a fantastic keeper [Edwin van der Sar] at the time and won the final – it must have been one of the best feelings ever for the players.
3. United 2 Bayern Munich 1, Nou Camp
26 May 1999, Champions League final
I’ve got to include this game. I think some people had written United off and didn’t think they would get themselves back into it, but you saw that spirit that we talk about a lot and will always talk about, which got them back into it. Watching Ole’s [Gunnar Solskjaer] goal go in was a great moment but for me Peter Schmeichel’s celebration was just brilliant. It was one of those games that you’ll never forget.
4. United 3 Aston Villa 0, Old Trafford
22 April 2013, Premier League
This was a great night for us, winning the league and Robin [van Persie] scoring a hat-trick. I actually watched it from my hospital bed because I’d had an operation that day. I was just sat there hoping we could get the win and we couldn’t have asked for a better start. And then the pass from Wazza [Wayne Rooney] for the second goal for Robin with the volley… we knew we’d won the league when that went in. Not being able to be there and celebrate with the boys was disappointing but I was there in spirit and it was great to get my first title medal.
5. United 2 Aston Villa 1, Wembley Stadium
28 February 2010, League Cup final
The final match for me is a game that shows that team spirit once again. It was the 2010 League Cup final and I was actually up against United, playing for Aston Villa. We got a penalty early on and Vida [Nemanja Vidic] should have been sent off for conceding it! It didn’t happen, though. We went 1-0 up and felt comfortable but I remember MO [Michael Owen] scoring and it just showed again the spirit United have to get themselves back into games and go on to win. We were flat on our feet but they just kept going with that fantastic spirit.
