Blackett Drawing Confidence From Van Gaal
Tyler Blackett has spoken of his positive relationship with Louis van Gaal and explained how the Manchester United manager is continuing to mould his fledgling career at Old Trafford.
The Dutchman has a reputation for trusting youth and a penchant for adaptable players who can fit his philosophy. While a swathe of new players have joined the Reds this season, Blackett has made a huge impression and the Hulme-born defender is determined to continue his personal ascent.
"From day one, the manager said that he was going to give young players a chance and he has kept his word, which is pleasing for us all to see," Tyler explains in Sunday’s United Review, the club's matchday programme. "I am just pleased that he has recognised me and the other young players who can help the team. He is very encouraging and pushes you to do well.
"There are times when you need a push if you are not doing so well, so I've enjoyed working with him. Is he scary? He has his moments when he tells you the truth, but I think that is good for players because you always want to know where you stand with the manager. It has been really good so far.
Blackett is available to face Everton after serving a one-match suspension following a red card in the 5-3 defeat at Leicester, although Marcos Rojo is likely to again partner young Paddy McNair in central defence. While Tyler was disappointed by his dismissal, the 20-year-old is certain he will benefit from the experience.
"It is definitely something I can learn from. It was a heightening occasion and was something that I have to put in the back of my mind. It was disappointing for me because I got sent off, but also for the team as we didn't perform to our best. The manager spoke to me afterwards and explained there were other options I could have chosen, rather than bringing the player down. It's definitely something I've learned from and will remember."
