Shaw Wants To Emulate Great Manchester United Left-backs
Luke Shaw is confident he can reach the left-back standards set by Patrice Evra and Denis Irwin at Manchester United.
And the 19-year-old feels the presence of his parents in the area after their relocation from Surrey will enable him to keep improving at Old Trafford.
During Saturday’s 1-0 win over Crystal Palace, Shaw went on the type of overlapping run made famous at the club by Evra and Irwin and the youngster is sure he can have as good a career at the club as they did.
"There is Patrice Evra and Denis Irwin that are top quality left-backs and I just want to come here and prove to everyone that I can be just as good as them two legends," he said.
"It's a new surrounding for me but the best thing is that my family have come up with me.
"My Mum and Dad are here so I'm not just a 19-year-old living up here by myself.
"I have a good structure at home and good people around me.
"It makes me feel more comfortable. It helped me settle because even at Southampton I never lived with them but it's nice to be with them and to even spend time with my family.
"I feel at home now. Everyone has been really good with me, not just the players but the staff as well.
"They have made me feel really welcome and now I just want to keep on improving, working hard in training and get the best out of myself."
Shaw almost scored against Palace after one memorable burst forward, eventually forcing goalkeeper Julian Speroni into a low save with a firm shot.
Former United full-back Phil Neville said the run reminded him of Gareth Bale, and the teenager promises the United support that will not be the last time they see it this season.
"It's something I have in my ability and I think I can do more of it," Shaw said.
"When chances come for me like that I tend to run forward like that. It was a good save. Hopefully soon a goal will come."
