Rooney Fit To Face Southampton

Louis van Gaal has confirmed Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney is fit to play against Southampton on Monday evening after recovering from the knee injury that ruled him out of the midweek victory over Stoke City.

Argentinian playmaker Angel Di Maria will not feature at St Mary’s Stadium, though, so that he can recover from the hamstring injury sustained in the first half of last weekend’s Barclays Premier League win over Hull City at Old Trafford.

While speaking to MUTV about Di Maria's injury, van Gaal gave a positive update on the no.7: "It's not a bad injury, but I am not a doctor. I have to say it like a manager, not like a doctor. But I think he shall recover very quickly."

Continuing the team news theme, Jonny Evans is fit for action and Phil Jones has returned to full training but the manager suggests the latter may have to play for the Reserves before returning to the first team.

"Evans is coming back. He is fit to play. Jones is coming back but not fit to play. He needs training sessions and maybe also matches in the second team. But he is coming back. He is fit to train. That is also very good. We are seeing already light in the tunnel."
