Shaw: I Have Learned From My Red Card
Luke Shaw believes he can learn an invaluable lesson from the red card he received in last Sunday's draw at West Ham, which forced him to miss the midweek victory over Burnley through suspension.
The 19-year-old was yellow carded for a foul on Carl Jenkinson in the 81st minute at Upton Park and received his marching orders for a second bookable offence in added time, having felled the advancing Stewart Downing just seconds after Daley Blind’s dramatic equaliser.
“It was a very frustrating one, especially as it came in the last seconds of the game,” Shaw told MUTV on Friday, when asked to reflect on his second-half dismissal in East London. “It was very frustrating for me.
“Maybe the first yellow card was a little bit light but I can’t argue with the second one. It was in the heat of the moment and I wanted to try to win the ball as we were going for the win. I was unlucky to have caught him but it’s something I’ve learned from.
“In every game and every training session, you learn a lot – especially in that situation. I didn’t need to go for that challenge in the last couple of minutes. It’s something I've looked back on and spoke with the coaching staff about. I’m still young and have still got a lot to learn.”
Having served his suspension, Shaw now hopes to reclaim his starting place at left-back in Monday’s FA Cup fifth-round tie at Preston North End.
“It’s a squad game and if the manager picks me then I’ll be very pleased,” Shaw explained. “But if he doesn’t then I’ll work hard to get back into the team. It helps us as players to improve if the competition is healthy and fierce.
“When I was out injured, Youngy [Ashley Young] was flying in my position but then he picked up an unfortunate injury. Now I’ve been playing, I hope I can keep my position and carry on.”
