5 Facts About Darmian

Want to know more about Manchester United's new signing, Matteo Darmian? Check out these five facts about the Italian defender...

1. Former Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti handed Darmian his AC Milan debut as a raw 16-year-old in a Coppa Italia clash with Brescia in 2006.

2. The right-back's senior international bow for Italy came at Fulham’s Craven Cottage against the Republic of Ireland in May 2014 and he made the World Cup squad soon afterwards, shining in the win over England.

3. The only other player to sign for United from Torino was a certain Denis Law, back in 1962.

4. Darmian will become the fifth Italian to represent United's first team. Carlo Sartori was the first; the ex-midfielder was born in Calderzone but came through the ranks after moving to Collyhurst as a child. Massimo Taibi, Giuseppe Rossi and Federico Macheda are the others.

5. The defender was born in Legnano, scene of a famous battle in 1176. The home of fashion house Dolce & Gabbana, it is the only place, in addition to Rome, mentioned in the Italian national anthem.
