Southgate: Wilson's At Right Club
James Wilson's development is in safe hands at Manchester United, according to the coach who gave him a goalscoring debut for England Under-21s on Thursday night.
The 19-year-old Reds striker took only 11 minutes to mark his first appearance at that level, after coming off the bench against USA Under-23s at Deepdale, the home of Preston North End. And after poking home a pass by Sunderland's Duncan Watmore, Wilson later set up a glorious chance for the Black Cats winger with a sublime through ball.
After also hitting the net in United Under-21s' behind-closed-doors friendly with Ajax, Wilson seems determined to impress Louis van Gaal after speculation towards the end of the transfer window that he could be sent out on loan.
Speaking after his side's 1-0 victory, England Under-21 coach Gareth Southgate said: "Wilson is a work in progress and still has some filling out to do, but he has shown he can score goals.
"He is at a club with a history of developing young players and I am sure they will make the right decision with him. Manchester United is one of the best football clubs in the world for nurturing players and what happens is for him and his club to decide."
