Sir Alex's Lauds Sir Bobby
Sir Alex Ferguson has spoken of his remarkable friendship with Sir Bobby Charlton, stating the Manchester United legend serves as a "great example" for anybody striving to do well at the club and, indeed, sport in general.
Since Sir Alex's arrival at Old Trafford in 1986, the pair have developed a strong bond behind the scenes and now sit near one another in the South Stand directors' box, the same stand that will be renamed in Charlton's honour today [Sunday].
Sir Bobby will witness the official renaming before the Barclays Premier League match against Everton and, to mark the occasion, his great friend Sir Alex has spoken at length, recalling fond memories of his time at the club alongside United’s most prolific goalscorer.
“The great attribute of Bobby - and it's a great example to anybody who has been successful - is how he has kept his feet on the ground and retained his humility all his life,” Ferguson told MUTV.
Sunday's special tribute serves to mark the 60th anniversary of Charlton’s debut for United, a wonderful bow that set the tone for a glittering career at Old Trafford as the forward bagged a brace in a 4-2 win over Charlton Athletic. Despite this fine start, and the success that followed, Sir Bobby has remained as down-to-earth as ever.
“The other thing about Bobby, which might surprise people considering the career he had as a footballer, is how shy he is,” Sir Alex continued.
“He's a very shy person and he might not like a lot of fuss, but what a solid human being and a person you would trust with your life.”
