Darmian Satisfied With First Season

Matteo Darmian is hoping to round off a satisfying first season at Manchester United by representing Italy at Euro 2016.

The full-back has been named in Antonio Conte's 30-man preliminary squad for a second training camp in preparation for the big tournament in France.

Although the defender has had a few injury problems, he can be pleased with his maiden campaign at Old Trafford as it started with the club's Player of the Month award for August and ended with success at Wembley against Crystal Palace.

Speaking to ManUtd.com after the 2-1 triumph over the Eagles, he was delighted to prove his return to fitness by replacing Marcos Rojo in the 66th minute and helping keep the Londoners out as part of a reshaped defence in the wake of Chris Smalling's sending off.

"We are very proud for the staff, for my team-mates and for the fans because we won this trophy and we fought until the end to win it," said Darmian. "I think this kind of match is the best to win because we came back after their goal and after Chris received a red card. We kept fighting and, at the end, won it with a fantastic shot from Jesse [Lingard]. It was a great goal to win us the game.

"It's always very good to win silverware and we are very happy. I hope it is the first of many. It is my first season and I think it was always going to be difficult to change culture and also the football but I tried to adapt quickly. I think it was a good season for me as, at the end, we won this trophy.

"After my ankle injury, I feel good now. I have to wait for the final list of the Italian coach but yes, of course, I want to go to the Euros. It is a big appointment for a player. It is a big chance to win another trophy.

"It will not be easy because I think our group is a very hard group [Belgium, Republic of Ireland and Sweden]. But we'll try to do our best in it and look forward to it."
