Shaw: United Showing Signs Of Champions

Luke Shaw believes Manchester United are showing early signs of ‘champions’ after he helped the Reds enjoy a very satisfying 2-0 Premier League win over Southampton at Old Trafford.

Speaking to MUTV after the game, Shaw said although there is still a long way to go, he even believes the Reds are showing early signs of champions after an impressive victory over his former club.

"You can see tonight we can improve but we are winning games and we still have a lot to improve on," he said. "That is a sign of, you could say, champions. I don’t want to speak too soon, but we have got a very strong squad and hopefully we can keep training hard together, getting to know each other and push for the title this season.

"It’s always important to get points on the board early on in the season. We are really happy with how we played, especially in the second half," he continued.

“I think, in the first half, at times, they were on top because of the mistakes we made, but we changed that in the second half and, as soon as we got the first goal, we pushed on and got another one and that was the game."

Shaw played a key role in the Reds penalty as he was tripped by Jordy Clasie and the United left-back was keen to point out there was contact with the Saints player.

"A lot of people are saying it wasn’t a penalty, but 100 per cent it was a penalty, he clipped my foot," he declared. "There was 100 per cent contact and I am not one to dive or to cheat. I am happy I played a part in one of the goals tonight."

Shaw, who started his career at Southampton, before signing for United in 2014, was pleased to make his first Old Trafford league appearance since his dreadful leg-break last season.

"This was my first home game back after my broken leg and the atmosphere was amazing - I love playing here," he said. "I wish we could play here every week, but that’s not the case. When we do, the fans are amazing."

The 21-year-old also a word for both Paul Pogba and matchwinner Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

“He [Pogba] is a superb player," said Shaw. "We knew what quality he would bring to the team and he has got so much pressure on him, especially in his first game back as a United player.

"He didn’t look fazed at all. He was one of our best players, along with Zlatan, who got the two goals tonight."
