6 Old Trafford Turnarounds
When the clock is ticking down at Old Trafford, Manchester United fans should always retain hope that things can be turned around in the closing stages.
The dramatic 2-1 win against Middlesbrough on New Year's Eve was the latest example that all is not necessarily lost if the Reds are trailing as a home game enters its final stages.
Jose Mourinho has stressed the importance of having the home supporters behind the team throughout every match and, with Reading next up in the FA Cup, an EFL Cup semi-final date with Hull City to follow and the genuine Premier League blockbuster against Liverpool already circled in the diary, more excitement looks guaranteed.
"We have gained points on the second-placed team [Liverpool] and we play them at Old Trafford," commented the boss after Monday's away win at West Ham. "If we play with 75,000, then we can win."
Few things in football can match the ecstasy of snatching victory from the jaws of defeat and as you can read below, there have been several occasions over the years when the Reds have bounced back with a vengeance to take the Premier League points in a thrilling finale.
SIX PREMIER LEAGUE TURNAROUNDS AT OLD TRAFFORD
20/02/1993 v Southampton 2-1
Nicky Banger's 78th-minute goal looked to have stolen the points for the Saints, only for teen star Ryan Giggs to score twice past Tim Flowers in a minute to bring the house down.
10/04/1993 v Sheffield Wednesday 2-1
One of the most famous comebacks in the club's history, as it was pivotal in ending the long wait for the title. Trailing to John Sheridan's penalty, Steve Bruce produced two headers, the second deep into stoppage time, to spark wild celebrations, particularly from assistant boss Brian Kidd.
29/01/1997 v Wimbledon 2-1
Over an hour had gone when Chris Perry opened the scoring but Giggs levelled with quarter of an hour to go to prompt a typical siege on the visitors' goal. Andy Cole popped up with the winner in the 82nd minute.
01/01/2003 v Sunderland 2-1
A New Year's Day to remember as an own goal by Juan Sebastian Veron and inspired display by keeper Jurgen Macho threatened an almighty upset. David Beckham ended the Wearsiders' resistance with an equaliser and Paul Scholes nodded in the last-minute winner.
05/04/2009 v Aston Villa 3-2
Federico Macheda wrote himself into United folklore with a crucial goal in the title race, a beautiful curler in injury time, on his debut. It had taken Cristiano Ronaldo's second strike of the game to haul the Reds back onto level terms after John Carew and Gabriel Agbonlahor netted for Villa.
26/10/2013 v Stoke City 3-2
Although Robin van Persie cancelled out Peter Crouch's early effort, Marko Arnautovic ensured Stoke led until the 78th minute. Wayne Rooney supplied the equaliser and Javier Hernandez broke the Potters' hearts by heading home to turn the game on its head.
