Souness Selects His Combined Man Utd v Liverpool XI
Graeme Souness selects his combined Man Utd and Liverpool XI ahead of the clash on Super Sunday, live on Sky Sports.
The two sides face off at Old Trafford, live on Sky Sports from 4pm after Everton v Manchester City on 'Merseyside v Manchester' Sunday, with the hosts on a run of six wins on the bounce in the Premier League.
Souness has gone with a Liverpool-led back four of Nathaniel Clyne, Joel Matip, Dejan Lovren and James Milner, in front of United goalkeeper David De Gea.
Justifying his selection, Sky Sports pundit Souness said: "[Antonio] Valencia is the only one I’d maybe think about, and I’m not really sure he knows his best back four yet, Jose."
In midfield, Souness has Michael Carrick sitting, alongside Jordan Henderson and Adam Lallana in central positions.
Carrick is undefeated in a Manchester United shirt this season, having won seven of the nine Premier League games he has played.
Jose Mourinho's side have averaged 2.56 points per game when Carrick has played this campaign, compared to 1.45 points per game without him.
In the front three positions, Souness has gone with Juan Mata and Philippe Coutinho either side of Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
Man Utd v Liverpool is still the biggest game in English football, insists Souness, who played in the fixture as a manager and player.
"When you’re involved, you think it’s the biggest game in England you can be involved in. I’m no longer involved directly, but I still believe that.
"It’s the hype surrounding it, the dislike the teams have for each other, and that extends to the vast majority of supporters on both sides. It’s totally understandable because they’re the two most successful teams in the history of the English game, and they’re such close neighbours."
