Jones Discusses Injury

Phil Jones expects to be fit "in a few days" after he was forced to leave the pitch with an injury after 55 minutes of Manchester United's 0-0 draw against Hull City.

The centre-back was given a huge ovation from the home crowd as he walked down the tunnel with his right boot in his hand, with Chris Smalling sent on in his place. But fans fearing that Phil could be in for another long absence will no doubt be pleased to read the following comments from the man himself.

"My foot's bruised but I'll be fine," he told MUTV after the match. "It's nothing sinister, nothing serious, so hopefully in a few days I'll be fine."

Jones's verdict on the match was not as positive, with the defender admitting there was disappointment in the United dressing room after victory proved elusive.

"We needed to win tonight, especially with the results yesterday which fell in our favour," he said.

"We said before the game that this was our chance to put some pressure on the teams above us. We knew that teams around us would slip up and they have done, but we couldn't capitalise on it. We're bitterly disappointed. The lads are down in the dressing room, as you'd expect."

As someone whose day job it is to prevent opponents scoring, Jones had to admire the performance of Hull goalkeeper Eldin Jakupovic who made several great saves to keep United's attack at bay.

"I think if we had scored in the first 20 minutes, then you couldn't have seen much of a way back for Hull with us 1-0 up, creating chance after chance," said the Reds defender. "But we just couldn't get that goal.

"Their keeper pulled off an absolutely heroic save from Juan [Mata, in the second half]. There's nothing you can do. We've said it so many times this season that a goalkeeper has come here and been world class. But listen, it's no excuse. We needed to win the game. We've not won the game.

"All we can do now is look towards Leicester on Sunday. Thank God it comes around quickly because we can try and put things right again."

When asked if he still feels there is enough time to catch the teams above United in the Premier League, Jones concluded: "Of course, but straight after the game you're not looking too far ahead. You're just disappointed with the game, how things have gone.

"I don't think we played too badly tonight. We moved the ball well in patches but just couldn't get the winning goal. It's been the same story a few times here at Old Trafford."
