Reds Close To Wembley Record
Manchester United will make the trip to Wembley for Sunday’s EFL Cup final against Southampton and, while securing silverware is the priority, the Reds will also achieve a record-equalling feat.
United have made the trip to the national stadium on 48 separate occasions, and Sunday’s cup final will see the Reds draw level with Arsenal, who have played at Wembley 49 times. The team with the third-highest amount of appearances at Wembley is Liverpool, with 38, while London clubs Tottenham and Chelsea have made 30 and 29 trips respectively.
Of those 48 visits that United have made so far, six have been for a League Cup final – of which the Reds have won three – and a record 18 have been made for both FA Cup finals and Community/Charity Shields, with four FA Cup semi-finals also included.
Two European Cup/Champions League finals complete the tally, with contrasting nights against Benfica and Barcelona in 1968 and 2011 respectively ensuring that United’s rich history at the national stadium continues.
There is still time for Jose Mourinho’s men to move clear of Arsenal before the end of the season, with another three potential trips still to come if the Reds can negotiate a way past quarter-final opponents Chelsea to reach the FA Cup semi-finals, which are played at Wembley, and then the final. United could also face Premier League rivals Tottenham in the Europa League, with Spurs still playing European home games at the national stadium.
Our record at Wembley offers plenty of room for encouragement ahead of Sunday’s final, too, with United losing on just 15 of those 48 occasions, while we have an overall goal difference of +17 and a respectable win percentage of 43.75%.
