Who's Next In The Europa League

The draw for the Europa League quarter-finals takes place on Friday at 12:00 GMT with Manchester United among the remaining eight clubs in the competition.

Unlike previous draws, there will be no seeding of clubs for the last eight, meaning United could take on any of the seven other sides. The quarter-finals will be played on Thursday 13 and 20 April, with the sides drawn first out of the pot playing the first leg at home. The Reds will host Chelsea in the Premier League between the two Europa League matches.

The seven sides United could face in the quarter-finals are as follows:

Besiktas (TUR) – Joined the Europa League after finishing third in their Champions League group. They overcame Hapoel Be’er Sheva in the Round of 32 before knocking out Olympiakos 5-2 on aggregate to reach the quarter-finals.

Celta Vigo (ESP) – Spain’s remaining representatives finished second in Group G, before relying on extra time to defeat Shakhtar Donetsk in the Round of 32. Like United, they overcame Russian opposition in the Round of 16, defeating FK Krasnodar 4-1 on aggregate.

KRC Genk (BEL) – Started their Europa League campaign in the second qualifying round, before finishing top of Group F. They saw off Astra Giurgiu in the Round of 32 before beating fellow Belgian side KAA Gent 6-3 on aggregate to reach the last eight.

Lyon (FRA) – Another side who dropped in from the Champions League, the French side showed their class with an 11-2 aggregate win over AZ Alkmaar in the Round of 32. They proceeded to overcome Roma 5-4 on aggregate, with a 4-2 home victory helping them reach the quarter-finals.

Schalke (GER) – The German side dominated Group I to reach the Round of 32, where they saw off Greek side PAOK 4-1 on aggregate. They then came up against fellow German side Borussia Monchengladbach, going through on away goals following a 3-3 aggregate draw.

Ajax (NED) – The Dutch giants entered the Europa League after losing in the Champions League play-off round. They finished top of Group G before overcoming Legia Warsaw to see themselves into the Round of 16. They reached the quarter-finals by defeating FC Copenhagen 3-2 on aggregate.

Anderlecht (BEL) – Anderlecht’s elimination in the Champions League third qualifying round pushed them into the Europa League, where they finished second in Group C. Away goals enabled them to beat Zenit Saint Petersburg in the first knock-out stage, before Cyprus side Apoel Nicosia were defeated 2-0 on aggregate in the Round of 16.
