Gomes Praises Wayne Rooney After Manchester United Debut

Angel Gomes says "anything is possible" after replacing Wayne Rooney on Sunday, 10 years after meeting Rooney as a six-year-old.

Gomes, now 16, became United's youngest debutant since Duncan Edwards, and the first player to play in the Premier League born in 2000 when he came on with five minutes remaining for Rooney in the club's 2-0 win over Crystal Palace on Sunday.

"To come on for the club legend Wayne Rooney and also be the youngest player to play in the PL I can't describe how I am feeling," Gomes wrote on social media after the game. "I can only thank God for this - Thank you everyone for the support."

The United prospect has now taken to Instagram to post a motivational picture of his younger self with Rooney - still in the early days of his career at the club - after taking the club captain's place a decade on.

Rooney, 31, has been urged to leave Old Trafford in order to gain more first-team football by former United player Phil Neville, having struggled for first-team games under Jose Mourinho this season.

Mourinho's decision to play Rooney in an otherwise youthful United side against Palace has indicated the England skipper is unlikely to start ahead of Marcus Rashford in the Europa League final against Ajax on Wednesday.
