Your Tour Briefing: Day Three In Los Angeles
Your Tour Briefing is our handy guide to the latest news and events surrounding Manchester United, as Jose Mourinho's men continue preparations for the new season in the USA.
Here’s what happened on Wednesday…
1: MITCHELL PRAISED BY A LEGEND
We started our day by publishing quotes from legendary full-back Denis Irwin, who has been impressed by young Demi Mitchell and his attitude to improvement. The key for the prospect this summer, Den said, is to listen to the senior pros around him and soak up their knowledge. Coincidentally, our Academy graduate arguably stole the show in the morning’s training session with a deft back-heeled finish that our cameras captured from pitchside. You can check it out here via @ManUtd.
2: COLE EXCITED BY LUKAKU
“He’s a massive signing," Andy Cole told MUTV on the subject of Romelu Lukaku. “They’re all big-money signings nowadays but he’s proven in the Premier League. He’ll get goals and that’s what Manchester United missed last season. I think he’s got plenty of those in him.” You can watch the full interview with Coley on MUTV.com (UK and Ireland) and the MUTV app (rest of the world).
3: HAPPY BIRTHDAY, LUKE SHAW
The England international has turned 22, but there was little time for celebrating with rehabilitation to complete at UCLA. He is currently working away from the main group alongside Ashley Young and Marcos Rojo, who are also recovering from serious injuries. Of course, he naturally received a warm ovation from the United supporters on the campus, who sang Happy Birthday for him. Watch it here.
4: MCTOMINAY’S TWO AIMS
A different player speaks to MUTV each day at training and today was the turn of Scott McTominay, our fledging Scot who only made his senior debut back in May. As such, he’s buzzing to be on tour and admitted he has clear aims for the summer: “I just want to show the manager what I am capable of and hopefully he likes what he sees,” he told us. Read more of the interview here.
5: UNITED IN THE COMMUNITY
Our Soccer Schools coaches were out and about in the community, providing a coaching clinic for local youngsters in LA. Mike Neary, Head of Coaching at MUSS, told us the day was a big success: “Working with these coaches and young players from the local clubs takes Manchester United right into the heart of youth development in the US. It was a privilege to coach such enthusiastic, well-mannered youngsters.”
6: JANUZAJ LEAVES FOR SOCIEDAD
Away from the tour, further transfer business was completed with the sale of Adnan Januzaj to La Liga club Real Sociedad. The Belgian later posted a farewell message on Twitter: “Unfortunately, my time at the club has come to an end and it didn't go the way I wanted it to go but I will always have love for Manchester United,” he wrote. “And finally, a huge thank you to the fans that have stuck by me through the good and bad times! I will never forget that positive support.” We wish him well for the future.
