Van Nistelrooy Amazed By Rashford's Rise

Legendary Manchester United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy admits he has been blown away by Marcus Rashford’s meteoric ascent from Academy prospect to first-team star.

The 19-year-old made his name in February 2016 by scoring a brace on his senior debut, in a UEFA Europa League tie against FC Midtjylland. He repeated that feat on his Premier League bow against Arsenal three days later, before playing for England at Euro 2016.

Rashford has since become an integral part of Jose Mourinho’s team and that is highlighted by the fact he registered 53 appearances across all competitions last season, scoring 11 goals in total.

Van Nistelrooy first saw Marcus playing when he scored twice in the UEFA Youth League back in 2015, and even then he knew the Wythenshawe lad was one to watch.

“I watched him playing in the Under-19s against PSV,” says Ruud. “He was a huge talent even then. It’s amazing how he has developed so far. I couldn’t imagine that he would be playing in the first team just six months after I saw that game.

“And now he has won the Europa League, too! He has experienced such a quick development and that says something about his ability to learn. That’s a good characteristic to have.”

Rashford’s rapid rise has also seen him recognised at international level and he currently has nine England caps, plus 73 United appearances. Despite his early success, Ruud is keen to point out the importance of him staying grounded in the future.

“Now he’s made his debut for England, the key is to stay focused on football. If you can learn as quickly as he has and stay stable, then he will be an excellent player for United.”
