Varela Returns To Penarol

Uruguayan full-back Guillermo Varela has returned home to join Penarol from Manchester United.

The South American moved to Old Trafford from the Montevideo club as a 20-year-old in June 2013 for an undisclosed fee, believed to be £2.4m, on a five-year contract.

He was the first signing of David Moyes' ill-fated reign as United boss.

However, he struggled to make an impact in England, making 11 appearances for the Red Devils and spent last season on loan in the Bundesliga with Eintracht Frankfurt.

Varela played 10 times for the Germans but his time there ended on a sour note after he was suspended by the club for misconduct after getting a tattoo ahead of the German cup final against Borussia Dortmund.

He also went on loan to Real Madrid Castilla in Spain in September 2014, having failed to make an appearance for United.

Varela featured just four times in the 2015/16 Premier League on his return from the Spanish capital but featured in both legs of United's Europa League last-16 defeat by north-west rivals Liverpool.

He then scored an injury-time winner at White Hart Lane to help United clinch the Under-21 Premier League title in April 2016.
