Manchester United's Greatest League Cup XI
Ahead of Manchester United's Carabao Cup fourth-round clash with Swansea City on Tuesday night, we've examined the Reds' five competition triumphs to date and have picked out an all-star XI based on the players' performances in the finals...
Ben Foster (2009)
The keeper made key contributions in normal time and the penalty shoot-out. A brilliant late stop to deny Tottenham Hotspur's Aaron Lennon kept the Reds alive, before his spot-kick save from Jamie O’Hara teed up a shoot-out success.
Gary Neville (2006, 2010)
His experience brought assurance at a vital time during the 2010 victory over Aston Villa, but it was in the 2006 final against Wigan Athletic that he shone brightest, turning in a magnificent defensive display and a marauding assist for Louis Saha.
Jonny Evans (2009, 2010)
Another two-time winner, the Northern Ireland international belied his tender years with two flawless performances in the finals. Neither Tottenham in 2009 nor Villa the next year were able to exploit his inexperience.
Rio Ferdinand (2006, 2009)
The imperious England defender helped United to keep two clean sheets in his two finals, two clean sheets. Never looked anything but totally assured as he calmly blunted the attacking ambitions of both Wigan and Tottenham.
Patrice Evra (2006, 2009, 2010)
The Frenchman had his first taste of silverware with a 2006 cameo, restricted the influence of the dangerous Lennon three years later and then captained the side to glory in 2010 with a peerless display.
Cristiano Ronaldo (2006, 2009)
Always a player for the big occasion, Ronny marked the 2006 final with a superb third goal, then almost won the 2009 final himself before ultimately converting a penalty in the shoot-out.
Paul Ince (1992)
Although shorn of Bryan Robson’s company due to injury, Ince won a titanic battle against a young Roy Keane in the Nottingham Forest ranks and ensured that he stamped his authority all over the final.
Ryan Giggs (1992, 2006, 2009)
The evolving influence of Giggs laid bare. A high-speed wing display capped by an assist in 1992, then a dominant central midfield performance in 2006 followed by a calming cameo and penalty conversion in 2009.
Brian McClair (1992)
The Reds’ all-time leading League Cup scorer is assured of his place in the team, having notched the only goal of a tense final against Nottingham Forest which brought United’s first success in the competition.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic (2017)
It was inevitable that the giant Swede would illuminate his first cup final with the Reds. After a sublime free-kick opener, the big man pulled out a superb late winner after Southampton had threatened to snatch the silverware.
Wayne Rooney (2006, 2010)
The teenage tyro netted two goals and was named Man of the Match against Wigan, before his more mature, predatory self headed home a technically brilliant winner against Aston Villa four years later.
