Mourinho: Shaw Will Get More Chances

Jose Mourinho insists Luke Shaw will get more opportunities to play after the defender’s impressive display against CSKA Moscow saw him voted Manchester United’s Man of the Match by supporters.

The no.23 made his first start of the season and played 90 minutes in the Reds’ 2-1 victory over the Russian side at Old Trafford, which secured United’s place in the last 16 of Europe’s elite competition as winners of Group A.

He was a constant threat in a wing-back role, bombing up and down the left flank throughout, and came close to scoring in the first half when his sweetly struck volley was well saved by CSKA keeper Igor Akinfeev.

Speaking in his post-match press conference, the boss expressed he was pleased with the full-back’s performance on his return to first-team action and promised there will be game time to come for the former Southampton man.

He said: “A very positive performance, especially with the balls going forward. Creating a lot, great intensity in his game. It was no surprise that in 80 minutes he’s feeling the consequences of that intensity; it’s normal as it’s the first match of the season for him. But he’s going to get more.”

The manager added on BT Sport: "He was waiting for quite a long time, he was deserving [of his chance] for quite a long time. It’s not easy to give an opportunity to a player who doesn’t play for many months in matches where the team really needs [a] result.

"I wanted to make changes but changes in players that need a change and not spend a change on Luke. But he managed on for 90 minutes and really I told him this is not the best, this is just an opportunity for you to play and to improve your level. Honestly, I am happy with his performance."

Shaw was the overwhelming winner of our star man accolade, as voted for by Reds fans on Twitter, with 81 per cent of the final vote, ahead of team-mates Juan Mata (10 per cent) and Marcus Rashford (nine per cent).

The left-back had only made two substitute appearances in the Carabao Cup prior to Tuesday night’s game but will hope he can get more time on the pitch during the hectic December schedule for the Reds, which continues with Sunday’s crucial derby against Manchester City.
