Lukaku Voted Man Of The Match
Romelu Lukaku has been voted Manchester United’s Man of the Match by fans on Twitter after inspiring the Reds to victory over his former club Chelsea.
The no.9 scored for the fourth successive home game with a fine finish to level matters after Willian’s opener for the visitors, before his pinpoint delivery was headed home by Jesse Lingard with 15 minutes remaining to secure three crucial points for United.
The Belgian claimed an overwhelming 73 per cent of the final vote with another ex-Chelsea player, midfielder Nemanja Matic, finishing second in the poll (17 per cent) while Scott McTominay (13 per cent) was the third nominee.
It’s the second successive weekend in which Lukaku has claimed the star-man award, after capping an influential display with a brace against Huddersfield Town in the Emirates FA Cup.
Speaking to MUTV immediately after the Chelsea game, the striker insisted the win wasn’t any more significant for him because it was against his old employers but he was certainly pleased to contribute to a key result for United.
“No, I’m just happy with the win for the team,” he said. “It was an important win for us I think. It was important for us to win and to get back into second position in the league so I'm just happy with the win.”
Lukaku now has 22 goals in 40 games across all competitions in what has been an impressive debut season so far for the 24-year-old, but he is keen to do more in order to help the Reds win silverware.
On his scoring ratio to date, he added: “It's not bad, but you can always improve. I want to do better for the team. At the end of the day, I'm at Manchester United and I want to win trophies. That's the most important thing.”
