De Gea up for PL Player of the Year award
Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea has been nominated for the EA Sports Premier League Player of the Year award for 2017/18.
It’s the latest recognition in a long line of accolades this term for the irrepressible Spanish stopper, who has enjoyed yet another sensational campaign, which he has described as the best of his seven seasons with the Reds.
He became the first United player to win the Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year award, as voted for by the fans, and also the Players’ Player of the Year trophy in a single season for a third time.
The 27-year-old was also named in the PFA Team of the Year and EA Sports Premier League Team of the Season, while he also among the nominees for the PFA Player of the Year award, which was eventually won by Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah.
De Gea could yet win another personal prize this term in the form of the Golden Glove, awarded to the goalkeeper with the most Premier League clean sheets, for the first time since arriving at Old Trafford in 2011. With two league games to go, he has 17 shut-outs – more than any other keeper.
The former Atletico Madrid keeper gave us another reminder of his world-class ability with two stunning saves in the first half of Friday night’s defeat at Brighton – just the latest in a collection of remarkable stops this term.
The other five players nominated for the award are Kevin De Bruyne (Manchester City), Harry Kane (Tottenham Hotspur), Salah (Liverpool), Raheem Sterling (Manchester City) and James Tarkowski (Burnley).
