Matic wins Goal of the Season award
Nemanja Matic’s stunning injury-time winner against Crystal Palace in March has been voted Manchester United’s Goal of the Season for 2017/18 by fans in our poll.
The Serbian is known for shooting from distance and came up with the goods in stupendous style at Selhurst Park.
The midfielder took aim with his left foot from 25 yards and unleashed an unstoppable half-volley, which flew past Palace keeper Wayne Hennessey and won the game for the Reds, who had trailed 2-0 before Chris Smalling and Romelu Lukaku got on the scoresheet to make it 2-2.
"I’m happy," Matic told MUTV after receiving the award. "It's one more trophy for my small collection; my kids will also be very happy.
"It was a good goal, but it was also a good assist from Paul [Pogba]. It was a very important game for us and of course I was very, very happy."
A goal that will live long in the memory, Matic’s first strike in a United shirt also topped our Goal of the Month poll for March and is certainly worthy of the best strike of the season accolade.
Asked how many times he had watched it back, Matic replied: "Maybe 300 times, because of my son, for sure! I watched maybe 10 times and when I came home my son was really happy and I had to watch with him, so we watch every other day."
The spectacular effort was one of 10 shortlisted for the Goal of the Season prize, beating off competition from a number of eye-catching strikes – including Antonio Valencia’s rocket against Everton, Ashley Young’s free-kick against Watford and Jesse Lingard’s exquisite flick against Burnley.
