McTominay: We want to win for Sir Alex

Manchester United are desperate to lift the Emirates FA Cup for Sir Alex Ferguson, according to Scott McTominay, who posted the above picture on his personal Instagram account recently.

The Reds are looking to end 2017/18 on a high with silverware when facing Chelsea in Saturday’s showpiece final at Wembley Stadium (kick-off 17:15 BST).

Ahead of what could be his first appearance in an FA Cup final, McTominay insists the team will do everything to bring home the trophy, which he hopes will help Sir Alex on his road to recovery, following his recent surgery.

“It’s so important after a long season. It hasn’t quite gone to plan in the league and other cup competitions but we want to go for the FA Cup and win silverware,” the midfielder told MUTV.

“That’s what Manchester United is built around and we really want to do it for Sir Alex Ferguson as well, as he’s obviously not so well at this moment in time. It’s so important to bring home the silverware for him.”

‘IT WAS JUST AN UNBELIEVABLE DAY’

Having only broken into the first-team a year ago, McTominay wasn’t involved when the Reds beat Crystal Palace to lift the FA Cup in 2016, but described what the occasion was like from a fan's perspective.

“Obviously, you get the experience of what all your friends, family and the fans have, going down on the bus, the train or any other way of travelling,” the Scotland international said. “It was just an unbelievable day for all the fanbase and obviously everyone at the club.

“To see Jesse Lingard score that goal was incredible and it was obviously a moment that himself and all of the fans will never forget.

“Obviously as a player, you have to take as much in as possible and see how the players prepare for the game, particularly the players in your position, just to see how the team chemistry gets going because it’s such a big day.”

‘WEMBLEY IS AN AMAZING PLACE’

Like any young United player growing up, McTominay has vivid memories of watching the Reds at Wembley and has an anecdote of being at the national stadium as a kid which he always remembers.

“I went to Wembley when I was nine or 10 years old with my primary school,” the 21-year-old explained. “We played at Wembley before the League One play-off final and I scored the winning goal. That was around 10 or 11 years ago and it was an unbelievable memory for me.

“It’s something I’ve never forgotten and you cherish those memories when you go and look around Wembley. You want that feeling again of scoring at Wembley, this time in a professional match. It’s such an amazing stadium, it’s the home of English football and it’s an amazing place to be. It’s a place where you want to showcase your skills and go out to do your best for the team.”

‘ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE WITH OUR TEAM SPIRIT’

The Reds were beaten 1-0 at Stamford Bridge in November but came from behind to win 2-1 when Chelsea visited Old Trafford in February – a victory which McTominay starred in, playing a key role in nullifying the threat of Blues playmaker Eden Hazard.

Our no.39 is expecting another tough game but feels the Reds should adopt a positive approach and recent results against fellow top-six teams should stand us in good stead.

“We’ve had mixed results against Chelsea this season – away from home was not so good but then obviously at home, we played really well after [conceding] the first goal,” Scott added. “I feel that we need to take the game by the scruff of the neck and go for it and go for the trophy as much as we can.

“We’ve got a tremendous team spirit within the group and obviously we’ve come from behind against numerous teams this season. If your team has that spirit and togetherness, then anything is possible really.”
