Rashford: The energy we feel from fans is amazing

Marcus Rashford feels the passionate Manchester United fans give players “amazing” energy during matches at Old Trafford.

Our no.10 is the cover star for the November issue of Inside United, the club's official magazine, which is on sale from today (Tuesday). In a special feature, the forward reflects on 12 images from memorable moments in his burgeoning career so far, ahead of his 21st birthday later this month.

One of his highlights was scoring twice in United’s home win over Liverpool last season, which Marcus remembers most for the vociferous atmosphere inside the Theatre of Dreams – something which will resonate with supporters on the back of Saturday’s thrilling 3-2 victory over Newcastle.

“Old Trafford was bouncing at that game and that energy you feel from the fans is amazing,” the England international recalled from the 2-1 success over Jurgen Klopp’s side back in March. “I think that’s what sets first-team football apart from Academy football. The fans give you energy when you’re tired, they give you that next burst so you can sprint again. It was an amazing atmosphere.”

Soon after bursting on the first-team scene by scoring a double against FC Midtjylland on his debut in the Europa League, Marcus became the youngest-ever scorer in a Manchester derby to give United a 1-0 win over City at the Etihad Stadium in March 2016.

“I think this was probably one of the biggest feelings I’ve ever had in a United shirt,” said Rashford. “Being away from home and winning the game the way we won it, it was an amazing feeling. You can see on my face [in the picture] that I’m very happy.”

Within the first few months of breaking into Louis van Gaal’s first team, Marcus claimed his first winners’ medal at the club, helping the Reds to lift the FA Cup at Wembley by beating Crystal Palace in the final.

He described this pivotal success as being the catalyst to have the desire to gain more silverware, even at this early stage of his senior career.

“I think this day just capped off the previous three months,” Marcus explained. “It really put us on a pathway [for trophies] and it made me hungrier to get this at the end of every season. When you win your first trophy it gives you this hunger to keep winning.”
