Who can the Reds face in the Champions League last-16?
Manchester United’s 2-1 defeat to Valencia on Wednesday evening means the Reds finish second in Group H of the Champions League.
United headed into the game knowing we had already secured our place in the round of 16 after picking up 10 points from the first five games in the group.
A win for United would have meant we topped the table, with Juventus losing 2-1 to Young Boys, but the defeat confirmed our place as runners-up and means we will face a side who finished first in another pool.
With the group stage now wrapped up, we know which sides the Reds can be paired with in Monday’s last 16 draw, which takes place in Nyon at 11:00 GMT.
United can face six of the eight teams who finished first in their respective groups. At this stage in the tournament clubs from the same country cannot be drawn together, meaning we will not be paired with Manchester City, nor can we face Juventus as they also qualified through Group H.
WHO CAN WE FACE?
Borussia Dortmund- The current Bundesliga leaders topped a tough group including Atletico Madrid, and picked up 13 points from their six games.
Barcelona- We haven’t met the Catalan side in a competitive game since the 2011 Champions League final. We also played them in the 2009 final.
Paris Saint-Germain- Surprisingly, we have never actually been drawn with PSG in the Champions League. The Ligue 1 outfit topped a tough group that included Liverpool and Napoli.
Porto- Jose Mourinho won Europe’s elite competition with the Portuguese side in 2003. We have played Porto eight times over the years, including the 2009 quarter-final which the Reds won 3-2 on aggregate.
Bayern Munich- One of our most famous European nights came against Bayern in the 1999 Champions League final. Their 3-3 draw with Ajax in the final group game confirmed their place as group winners.
Real Madrid- The most successful side in Champions League history and the current holders of the trophy. We played Los Blancos in last year’s UEFA Super Cup final in Macedonia.
