UNITED 2 CITY 0: BRUNO VOTED MAN OF THE MATCH
Bruno Fernandes has been voted Man of the Match in United’s 2-0 victory over City in the Manchester derby, after his genius free-kick set up Anthony Martial’s opening goal.
After earning a free-kick outside of the Blues’ box, our January signing took the resulting set-piece and showed his intelligence by expertly flicking a pass for Tony to volley home on 30 minutes.
That was the clear highlight from another superb performance by Fernandes and he left the action to a deserved standing ovation on 88 minutes, with supporters inside the stadium so keen to acknowledge his contribution towards our third Manchester derby victory of the campaign.
Users of the club’s Official App were also quick to recognise Bruno’s performance by voting him as our Man of the Match with 30 per cent of the poll result. Martial finished second with 18 per cent, while buccaneering right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka was third with a worthy 16 per cent.
Speaking after the win, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer raved about link-up between Fernandes and Martial for United’s sensational opening goal at a raucous Theatre of Dreams.
“They are practising together and they have hit it off with a connection,” he said. “You can see they enjoy each other's company. Bruno is that type of player, he has got that imagination and we give him the freedom to play how he wants to play. What a goal, what a volley from Anthony as well!”
Asked in the post-match press conference if Bruno has energised the club, Ole said: “Yeah, the whole club! He has everything I spoke about: he works hard, he’s humble, he has the desire and commitment, but he’s also got the X-factor. He’s a risk taker and has courage. He’s brave enough to make mistakes and, if you make enough mistakes, they’ll be corrected into fantastic assists or goals.”
David De Gea, who earned five per cent of the Man-of-the-Match vote, was also keen to praise Fernandes while reflecting to us on a memorable derby win at Old Trafford.
“He is a smart player, clever on the pitch,” said David. “He is a different player. When he’s on the ball, he can do a lot of things. This is why the club has signed Bruno. He is perfect for us. Anthony as well, he takes a great shot at goal. Let's keep looking forward, keep winning games and enjoy the win.”
Harry Maguire was understandably delighted with the team’s performance against one of the best sides in the Premier League and he reserved special praise for our new no.18.
“Yes, you can see with the first goal he brought some great creativity,” explained the club captain. “He and Anto are building a great little relationship and hopefully that will carry on from now for the future. It is a great goal and first-time finish. It is a big win. We deserved the three points.”
