United acknowledge UEFA coronavirus announcement

Manchester United has released the following statement in response to UEFA postponing this summer's European Championship:

CLUB STATEMENT

“We note the decision to postpone UEFA Euro 2020 to hopefully allow domestic and European competitions to come to a conclusion as a priority.

“Clearly coronavirus has created an unprecedented set of circumstances and the health and well-being of fans, players and staff has to come first.

“We will continue to play an active role in discussions through UEFA, the ECA and the Premier League and we will monitor developments closely.”

WHO MAY HAVE BEEN INVOLVED?

A number of United players were due to be involved in this summer’s Euro 2020 tournament, which was being held in a variety of different countries, with the final taking place at Wembley Stadium.

Harry Maguire and Marcus Rashford are mainstays for England, while Dean Henderson, Luke Shaw, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Jesse Lingard will also have harboured hopes of making it into manager Gareth Southgate’s squad.

David De Gea (Spain), Victor Lindelof (Sweden), Paul Pogba (France), Bruno Fernandes (Portugal) and Daniel James (Wales) all appeared certain to feature, if fit, while Anthony Martial’s form for the Reds may have pushed him towards consideration by French coach Didier Deschamps.

More United men are still looking to book a place in the finals, with the play-offs that were originally scheduled for later this month now postponed in any case.

Scott McTominay’s Scotland will initially face Israel at some point, while Nemanja Matic’s Serbia are set to take on Norway.

There is still the prospect of an all-Ireland play-off with United youngsters Kieran O’Hara (Republic of Ireland) and Ethan Galbraith (Northern Ireland) recently making a breakthrough with their countries.
