Fletcher Eyes United Stay

Scotland midfielder Darren Fletcher has revealed his desire to stay at Manchester United for the rest of his career.

The 26-year-old, who has spent 10 years at Old Trafford, notching up 255 senior appearances, is dreading the day that his time with United comes to an end.

Fletcher insists his ultimate dream is to emulate veteran team-mates Paul Scholes, Ryan Giggs and Gary Neville in prolonging his career with the Red Devils.

"You look at it as a step down if you leave," said Fletcher.

"If you are lucky enough to stay, you will have played at the top for your whole career and it does not get much bigger than Manchester United.

"Players who left say, 'think twice before you leave, because there is nowhere like Manchester United.'

"Everything about the club makes it the place you want to be. No-one really thinks about leaving when you are here."

Fletcher reserved particular praise for veteran Paul Scholes, who has indicated he may be prepared to continue at Old Trafford beyond next season.

When questioned on the greatest player he has played alongside on MLSsoccer's website, Fletcher said: "Paul Scholes.

"To have played at the top for 10-15 years, that's the benchmark for me, trying to reach his level. For what he's achieved, he has never really got the credit he deserved.

"Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs are almost like urban legends. They are fantastic role models for younger players like me to have."

Fletcher is part of a 22-man United squad currently in Chicago training for their five-match summer tour, and the midfielder believes football in America is continuing to grow in stature, particularly with the arrival of David Beckham and Thierry Henry.

"Everything about MLS and America - it's a great country - appeals to players," he said.

"You see how MLS has progressed; the league keeps getting bigger. It's a massively growing sport.

"There are great teams that would be big attractions to players. I would not be surprised to see more players head out here."
