Sheringham: All About The Boss
Treble-winning striker Teddy Sheringham thinks Sir Alex Ferguson's side will be worthy winners of the title if they can secure at least seven points from the remaining six games.
Sunday's victory at Stoke City widened the gap at the top to 15 points again with the Reds in action at West Ham on Wednesday while second-placed Manchester City entertain Wigan in a dress-rehearsal for the FA Cup final.
Sheringham, who won three titles at Old Trafford, was quick to pay tribute to Sir Alex in an exclusive interview with ManUtd.com ahead of his participation in the Red Heart United Legends game against Real Madrid on 2 June.
"Without a doubt, United would be worthy winners," he enthused. "They have been the most consistent team.
"I mean you could, after losing one [league title], feel let down and just wither away but that's all down to the manager. He makes you respond if you have won or lost. That's done and dusted - move on and get the next one."
Sheringham revealed how the manager spells out his message at the end of a campaign rather than during the pre-season.
"It's when you are leaving at the end of the season that he makes sure you come back with the right attitude," he stated.
"It's all down to the drive from the manager. Everybody loves the aura of Manchester United but, if you haven't got a manager in charge that's like Sir Alex, the drive doesn't come. It's all down to him, without a doubt.
"I think football clubs are all about the manager.
"If the manager is not fully in control and in charge, you have problems around the club. That's exactly what the Manchester United situation is - it's all about the manager.
"He does keep going and as long he's fit, well and healthy why shouldn't he continue?"
The midweek trip to Upton Park sees United tackle another of Sheringham's former clubs in West Ham and the ex-England international appreciates the Hammers relish putting one over the Reds.
"It's always a great atmosphere at Upton Park and they love Manchester United coming to town," he added. "West Ham love beating United so it will be a big game for them.
"But the title is over. It's done and dusted and on its way back to Old Trafford in my eyes and it has been for about four or five weeks."
