Vidic: We Must Improve

Nemanja Vidic is not troubled by Manchester United’s form following Sunday’s defeat at Liverpool, though the club captain acknowledges his teammates must improve in certain areas.

The champions were beaten by Daniel Sturridge’s solitary goal at Anfield, where David Moyes’s men dominated large chunks of the match and looked the more likely team to score throughout. However, although the possession stats were healthy, the goal count was disappointingly low.

Of course, Sunday’s match was preceded by last Monday’s stalemate with Chelsea, another match in which United failed to hit the back of the net. But when asked if he is worried about his team’s short dry spell in front of goal, Vidic was calm and keen to confront the matter head on.

“From every game you can take positives and negatives, even from this one,” he told MUTV. “In the first game against Swansea, we scored four. But I do not judge matches on goals. I think both games against Liverpool and Chelsea were both really solid, we didn’t give our opponents anything.

“Not scoring is not like us but it is still the beginning of the season and we have so many games to play, some tough games. I would not say we are worried but we have to improve some areas.”

As David Moyes explained after the final whistle, United’s performance was good and the Reds were only undermined by Sturridge’s fourth minute opener.

And since joining the club in January 2006, Vidic has played in plenty of titanic tussles with Liverpool and the Serbian admits he can't remember an easier outing for him at Anfield - which makes Sunday's defeat even more frustrating.

“Obviously we lost the goal after just three minutes," Nemanja explained. "I believe we had a lot of possession throughout the game but we couldn’t really score. I think today we had so many crosses from set pieces and we should have done better. But overall, we were the better team but we didn’t get three points.

“I don’t remember having such an easy game at the back. We had so many crosses and they didn’t look very dangerous. But we had lots of possession in the final third but the pass wasn’t there. We had so many crosses from set pieces and we didn’t take the chance to score from any of them.”
