Rio Ready For Anfield Test

Rio Ferdinand insists he knows what it means to the Manchester United fans to beat rivals Liverpool.

Sunday's big match gives the Anfield outfit the opportunity to move five points clear of the champions at this early stage and fuel hopes that a title challenge could be mounted under Brendan Rodgers. However, United's experienced defender feels the Merseysiders will find it difficult to break into the top three of the Barclays Premier League.

Although clearly aware of Liverpool's impressive start, the 34-year-old is ready to ensure United collect a sweet victory this weekend.

"The rivalry is always going to be huge," Ferdinand told MUTV's Countdown to Kick-Off. "You still get a different type of feeling when it's Liverpool - just the history between the clubs and the success Liverpool have had and the success we've had in recent years."

When asked if the tension can get to the players, the centre-back was also able to speak of the experience of being a supporter as he watched the FA Cup defeat to the Merseysiders in 2006 from the away end.

"Not quite as much as it does in the stands," he replied. "In the stands and getting to the ground can be a bit hairy at times but, on the pitch, you can sense the atmosphere leading up to the game and during the game.

"You know what it means to the people of Manchester to beat Liverpool, especially at Anfield.

I've been lucky enough to be on the winning team in my time. To do that, and come away from Anfield with a win, is a great feeling."

The Merseysiders have posted a 100 per cent record from their opening two fixtures after beating Stoke City and Aston Villa by 1-0 scorelines.

"I watched them against Villa and they looked really good and they have got some real good players," he stated. "I think their best signings have been the ones they got last season. Daniel Sturridge has been looking very impressive and Philippe Coutinho looks a good player. They are the ones I think we'll be looking at more than anyone else.

"I'll be honest - I see Manchester United, Manchester City and Chelsea [at the top] and then between Liverpool, Tottenham and Arsenal for that fourth spot."
